England striker Harry Kane insists it is too early to say whether the heartbreaking World Cup semi-final defeat to Argentina will be his last appearance on football’s biggest stage.

Thomas Tuchel’s side looked on course for a famous victory after Anthony Gordon fired England ahead. However, the holders turned up the heat to produce another dramatic comeback.

Enzo Fernandez levelled with a superb long-range strike before Lautaro Martinez snatched a stoppage-time winner to send Argentina into a second successive World Cup final.

The defeat leaves England’s senior stars facing inevitable questions over their international futures.

Kane turns 33 in two weeks and is unlikely to have many more opportunities to lift the World Cup.

However, the Bayern Munich striker is refusing to make any emotional decisions in the immediate aftermath of the crushing loss.

“It’s too early to say that,” Kane told Sky Sport Germany when asked if it was his final World Cup.

“I look from year to year, how I feel. I love playing for England. But of course, four years is a long time.

“Still, you can see how Messi still performs at a higher age. I don’t know. I first have to process this exit. We gave everything, but it wasn’t enough.”

Kane’s comments suggest he remains open to leading England into the next World Cup cycle, although much will depend on his physical condition and form over the coming years.

It was a frustrating evening for the England captain, who struggled to influence proceedings against Argentina’s disciplined defence.

The former Tottenham Hotspur star struggles to make an impact in important match-ups. Kane failed to register a single touch inside the opposition penalty area throughout the match.

He previously failed to record a touch in the opposition box in the penalty shoot-out loss to Italy in the 2020 European Championship final.
