Manchester United defender Harry Maguire was imperious against Manchester City last weekend, helping his side claim a come-from-behind 2-1 win against their noisy neighbours.
The 31-year-old has played a part in all four of their Premier league games, starting against Pep Guardiola’s side in the middle of the back three and excelled there.
The Englishman has struggled at times in the back four but has played some of his best football as part of a back three for both club and country.
And his performances, professionalism off the pitch have impressed Ruben Amorim enough to warrant an extended stay at Old Trafford as per Givemesport.
“Manchester United star Harry Maguire is not on course to be put on the market during the fast-approaching winter transfer window as head coach Ruben Amorim is confident he can become a key part of his Old Trafford plans and wants to extend his contract, GIVEMESPORT sources have revealed.
“Maguire’s Manchester United career has been saved by Amorim, according to GMS sources, and there is an increasing expectation that a one-year option to extend his contract will be triggered by his current employers to end speculation over whether he could depart as a free agent.
“GMS sources have been informed that Amorim has admired Maguire’s mindset and professionalism since his arrival in the Manchester United hot-seat, while he is adamant that he is capable of making himself one of the first names on the team sheet in his favoured system.”
The 31-year-old’s current deal ends in 2025 with the club holding the option of triggering a one-year extension. And Amorim, who has the final say regarding contract extensions, has seemingly provided the green light.
Maguire himself admitted recently that there have been positive talks with the club over a new deal and if he can keep this level of performances up, it might be a shrewd decision considering his experience and leadership ability.
Under Erik ten Hag, the former club captain had lost his way and the Dutchman had tried to sell him to West Ham last summer only for the move to collapse at the last moment.
He had been stripped of the captaincy as well but Maguire has put his head down and worked hard and it seems fans will be seeing much more of the Englishman moving forward.
Amorim’s arrival has certainly saved his United career with the club likely to turn down any approach for their centre-back in January with multiple clubs eyeing the former Leicester star owing to his soon-to-be free agent status.
