Liverpool made a decision to let Harry Wilson go back in 2021.

The Welshman moved to Fulham initially on loan with a permanent four-year deal attached to the agreement.

It’s been a stunning success for the playmaker - who enjoyed one season in the Championship with the Cottagers before making waves as a Premier League regular.

This season he has been his side’s chief creative weapon - scoring eight times in the top flight and providing five assists.

Furthermore he has been in excellent form for his national side - scoring a hat-trick against North Macedonia back in November en route to a FIFA World Cup semi-final playoff spot.

With a contract expiring in summer 2026 the 67-cap international looks set to become one of the hottest properties of the free agent market.

Liverpool could make Harry Wilson move

Liverpool have been linked with a move for their homegrown youth product - who featured only twice for the first team before embarking on a career elsewhere.

His Anfield career was characterised by multiple loan spells - at Crewe, Hull, Derby, Bournemouth and Cardiff - before he got fixed up with his current employers.

And a return to Merseyside could beckon for Wilson - who has featured as a right-sided midfielder, right-winger, attacking midfielder and even as a false 9 for his country this season.

That means it would be a smart pick-up for Arne Slot - for a player who knows the league and the club inside out.

Although his age might go against him - he will be 29 before next season kicks off - the fact that he’s got no transfer fee attached makes this an intelligent transfer.

Would Harry Wilson accept Liverpool squad role?

And Liverpool insider Ian Doyle at the Liverpool Echo isn’t dismissing the links out of hand - although he questions whether or not Wilson would be prepared to be a rotation player.

“Wilson will be available on a free transfer this summer, although Fulham haven't given up hope of agreeing a new contract with the Wales international,” he writes.

“Given he will be 29 in the summer, there's little chance under Fenway Sports Group's usual transfer policy that Liverpool would be interested if there was a fee involved.

“Would you take him as a squad option? Absolutely, especially with Liverpool needing to bolster their overall numbers. He knows the club and has plentiful experience at Premier League and international level.

“Could he be a direct replacement for Salah? That job perhaps will go to someone else. But the real question is whether Wilson would want to return to being a squad player having been a top-flight regular since leaving Anfield in 2021.”
