We have seen Pep Guardiola play more youthful starting lineups in each of Manchester City’s past two matches. His starting lineups against Liverpool and Tottenham have provided a glimpse into the future of his team. Last night we saw Jeremy Doku, Erling Haaland, and Savinho start on the wings and upfront during City’s 1-nil win over Tottenham. Based on the display of City’s front three last night you do get the feeling that Pep Guardiola may have found the ideal frontline for the rebuild of Manchester City.
In the first half of City’s win, we saw just how devastating Doku, Haaland and Savinho can be. The pace and trickery of Doku and Savinho caused Tottenham’s defence all sorts of issues. Both players were up for last night’s game, and both played a key role in Manchester City’s dominant first-half display. Erling Haaland also linked up well with the pair throughout the first half. Their combination play stretched Tottenham’s defence and they did provide an energy and verve to City’s attacking play that has been lacking at times this season.
Jeremy Doku set up Erling Haaland’s first-half winner last night. But on another night he could’ve set up a goal for Savinho and another one for Haaland. While those chances were spurned it did show that the trio are beginning to develop an understanding. But what the trio’s display showed is that they could be Manchester City’s preferred attacking trio going forward. If Pep Guardiola does play Omar Marmoush or Phil Foden behind those three Manchester City will have an attack that will cause their opponents an untold amount of headaches.
Speaking after last night’s match Pep Guardiola believes that Jeremy Doku, Erling Haaland and Savinho are City’s attack for the future. He explained: “For sure [the goal] it’s the future. We have a young, young team. The three up front is the future.”
There will be a time when a winger like Jack Grealish or a Bernardo Silva type will be required by Manchester City. But you do sense that Pep Guardiola has found Manchester City’s ideal attacking trio for now and for the future. There is the pace and trickery in Doku and Savinho’s play. Although, they do need to work on their delivery but that should come. You couple that with Erling Haaland’s movement, pace and finishing and you can see that Pep Guardiola’s side has a devastating weapon when all three are on the pitch together. But all indications are that those three players are Manchester City’s best attacking weapons for now and for the future. The hope is that they can develop that partnership for the remainder of this season to set them up for next season and beyond.
