Manchester United had their eyes on Hayden Hackney in the summer, but the player ultimately stayed with Middlesbrough.

The Englishman rose through the ranks at the North Yorkshire club before breaking into the first team in 2022. The 23 year old has since registered 110 appearances for Boro, scoring 10 goals.

His performances have caused a stir across Europe and have also turned heads at the Theatre of Dreams.

United reportedly tried to sign him in the summer to strengthen their midfield, but their efforts ultimately failed to bear fruit.

A cost-effective option for the job

The Red Devils are expected to pay particular attention to the midfield in 2026, especially as the position is the team’s weak point at present.

Recent reports suggest that the Premier League giants could revisit their interest in Hackney next year.

While the likes of Carlos Baleba and Elliot Anderson are also on United’s wish list, the Middlesbrough midfielder represents a cost-effective option for the role.

The Red Devils have kept a close eye on Hackney’s situation this season, but it now appears they will face stiff competition in the race for the youngster.

Newcastle want Hackney

According to TBR Football, Newcastle United have joined the race to sign Hackney in 2026. Speaking recently to the new outlet, journalist Graeme Bailey added: “As Boro mount a serious promotion challenge, Hayden Hackney is emerging as the cornerstone of their push.”

“However, I am told that Boro have little intention of allowing Hackney to leave in January – last season they sold Emmanuel Latte-Lath, which Michael Carrick felt cost them the chance of promotion, and they don’t intend on doing that again.

“That said, Boro’s resolve is set to be pushed if Hackney’s form keeps up – there could be some very big offers coming in January.

“Boro do know that the only way they can keep him, however, is if they get promoted and the only way to do that is by keeping him.”

United went head-to-head with the Magpies this summer, signing Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko from right under their noses. The Red Devils will be hoping to repeat the trick with Hackney next.

However, the Englishman isn’t short of options, with Tottenham Hotspur, Crystal Palace, Brighton & Hove Albion, Fulham and Brentford also in the race. Porto are reportedly interested in the youngster, while he has admirers at Bayer Leverkusen, Eintracht Frankfurt and Atalanta as well.
