One of the more controversial inclusions in Germany’s World Cup squad is Leroy Sané, who was booed by his own fans the last time he featured for the national team earlier this year.
The 30-year-old Galatasaray winger has faced criticism over his club form, with critics arguing he hasn't done enough to earn a spot. Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann accepts that view but believes other factors justify his inclusion.
“The output at club level was not enough. But he has five goal contributions in the last four matches for us. Of course, I also have to evaluate performances in the national team," Nagelsmann explained.
“He is being debated quite controversially. With him, people increasingly focus on what he doesn't bring. He is held in extremely high regard within the squad,” the coach added, saying there is “a good connection” with the player and that he believes “a strong synergy can develop.”
"He has something special in tight spaces. His perhaps not-so-strong club numbers means he will initially take on more of a challenger role. He can make a big difference against deep-defending opponents with his pace and technique. I have a very good relationship with him and I believe I can push him in a way that, after the World Cup, there will be significantly more positive opinions about him.”
The former Manchester City and Bayern Munich winger scored seven goals and provided nine assists in 43 games for Galatasaray in the 2025/26 season.
