Vincent Kompany is leading FC Bayern to an impressive season – and yet there is renewed speculation surrounding the 39-year-old about a possible return to Manchester City. A former teammate firmly believes that Kompany will one day be on the bench at the club close to his heart. But the reality in Munich is very different.
Bacary Sagna, Kompany’s team-mate at Manchester City between 2014 and 2017, made a clear prediction in an interview with Oddspedia. He sees the connection between Kompany and City not just professionally, but deeply emotionally: „I can very well imagine Vincent Kompany returning to Manchester City as a coach after Pep Guardiola leaves.“
For Sagna, it is clear that this relationship goes far beyond the sporting past: „He knows the club very well and was a player and captain there for years. I know that he also loves the city of Manchester – I believe that he still has a personal connection to it even after all these years.“
The fact that Pep Guardiola himself has recently hinted that an earlier separation is possible has further fuelled speculation. However, the timing makes a Kompany departure from Munich almost impossible. Just a few weeks ago, FC Bayern extended the Belgian’s contract early until 2029 – a clear signal that the record champions are focusing their future project on Kompany in the long term.
The Belgian has formed a team that is more stable, dominant and structured than it has been for years. Bayern is the sovereign leader in the Bundesliga, unbeaten in the Champions League and plays soccer that inspires players and fans alike. A coach who has initiated such a development does not leave his project after a few months – especially not when he has just extended his contract.
Even Sagna qualifies his prediction when it comes to timing: „He won’t leave Bayern so quickly, so it depends on when he would return to City.“
Kompany is not just a coach in Munich, but the central building block of a realigned club philosophy. He gives talents such as Lennart Karl, Pavlovic or Bischof room to develop, while at the same time guiding experienced players such as Gnabry or Upamecano back to their best level.
His style – communicative, calm, decisive – has not only calmed the team, but the entire FC Bayern environment. The club has found a rare blend of playful ease and structural stability.
In sporting terms, Kompany is also currently experiencing his most convincing phase as a coach to date, which has increased his market value but at the same time strengthened his bond with Munich. FC Bayern is not a transitional position for Kompany, but a challenge that he has actively accepted – and whose potential is far from exhausted.
