Hendrick on Robertson: “He’s No Longer Good Enough to Play for Liverpool”

Liverpool’s transfer activity has always been guided by strategy, not sentiment. In the latest Daily Red podcast from Anfield Index, David Hendrick laid out a detailed and unfiltered assessment of Liverpool’s current and prospective moves, covering everything from Lyon’s relegated talent pool to the viability of signing Alexander Isak and Marc Guehi.

Robertson’s Role Diminishes

One of the most striking statements from Hendrick was about long-time left-back Andy Robertson: “Even if Andy Robertson leaves – which at this point he should – he’s no longer good enough to play for Liverpool.”

Hendrick dismissed sentimental arguments around squad experience, arguing that the club is not short of senior players: “We didn’t miss them, not one iota… and we have plenty of veterans whether Robbo stays or goes.”

His point is clear: players should be retained for what they offer on the pitch, not for “intangibles”, which he described as “the most overrated thing in football.”

Isak in, Jota Out?

A major thread of Hendrick’s podcast centred on Liverpool’s interest in Alexander Isak, with suggestions of a creative swap deal involving Diogo Jota.

“There are suggestions that Diogo Jota could go to Newcastle in that deal for Isak and help bring down the cash amount.”

Despite a rumoured fee of around £150 million, Hendrick explained how Profit and Sustainability Regulations (PSR) would not be a concern: “If we signed Isak for £110 million, that’s only a £22 million hit on our books for PSR.”

He concluded that the deal is financially viable, saying: “We have no concerns at all with PSR. Absolutely none.”

Lyon’s Relegation Creates Opportunity

With Lyon relegated to Ligue 2, Hendrick urged Liverpool to capitalise on the situation. He highlighted three specific targets:

Guehi’s Role Would Be Rotational

On potential defensive reinforcements, Marc Guehi was named as a logical but limited option:

“I do see the logic in Guehi. He’s homegrown. He’s a leader. He’s proven… but he cannot be a starter for us. He’s not that level.”

Hendrick argued that Guehi could be effective as part of a rotation with Ibrahima Konaté and Virgil van Dijk, but not as a first-choice name on the teamsheet.
