Mason Greenwood is flying out to France to complete his €30 million move to Olympique de Marseille.

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano posted his trademark “here we go!” just a few minutes ago.

It had looked inevitable that Greenwood would join the Ligue 1 side after United accepted a bid for him last week.

However, backlash from the city’s mayor and late attempted hijacks from Serie A sides Lazio and Napoli threatened to derail the deal.

However it is understood that the 22 year old had his heart set on the south of France.

Romano posted:

“Mason Greenwood to Olympique Marseille, here we go! Deal in place between all parties.

“OM have booked private flight for Mason to land in Marseille, undergo medical tests and sign.

“Deal valid until June 2029.

“Man United to receive €30m package plus 50% sell-on clause.”

The last part of the post is slightly different than has been reported elsewhere.

Yesterday The Athletic‘s David Ornstein wrote that “The deal is worth €31.6million (£26.7m), comprising €27.6m (£23.3m) fixed and €4m (£3.4m) in add-ons, plus a large share of any future sale.”

Ornstein’s figures, in truth, look more precise than those of Romano. However, if Romano is right that the sell-on percentage is 50%, it represents pretty good business from Ineos, who were always going to have to cut their losses in regard to the Bradford-born man.

One advantage of Greenwood joining Marseille over either Serie A club, but especially Napoli, is that the said sell-on clause is likely to be easier to activate, at which stage United could be in for a major windfall.

Napoli’s president Aurelio de Laurentiis and Lazio’s Claudio Lotito are both notoriously stingy sellers, so if Greenwood had landed in either location, it would have been hard to move him on.
