With the international break and the recent Liverpool Legends’ Charity Match that helped raise over £1 million for charity, it was a chance to look back on those before our current team.

Fabio Aurelio was one of those who came before Andrew Robertson and Milos Kerkez in his position, and he featured alongside former teammate Steven Gerrard in the 2-2 draw.

LIVERPOOL LEGENDS 2026 | AURELIO, BABEL, KUYT, SPEARING & DOWIE REFLECT ON MEMORABLE DAY AT ANFIELD!

After the game, he was full of praise for the old and new members of the current Liverpool squad.

The former left-back credited fellow Brazilian Alisson Becker, talking fondly of his presence in the squad, as well as the highlight of his career with the goal away at West Brom.

Aurelio said, “We saw some of his clips where he scored the header. Obviously, he’s a very important player for LFC. “It’s very unfortunate he’s been injured for the recent games for Liverpool and also for Brazil, as he’s very important for the country as well, and we hope he stays free of those injuries for the rest of the season, as he is very important for us.”

Alisson was dismissed from the Brazil squad due to the injury that kept him out of Liverpool’s most recent fixture against Brighton, with the veteran keeper taking to Instagram to say he will be “out for a while”.

Left-back successor Andrew Robertson was also given high praise by the Brazilian left-back, as he feels the Scotsman has been a top professional in his nearly nine years at the club. “Since he’s arrived, I think he’s been at the top level; he’s won a lot of trophies. You cannot complain about what he’s given on the pitch, and that’s the most important thing.”

Andy Robertson has taken a different role with less game time at Liverpool this season, but the consistency of his performances has been needed in times when Kerkez has struggled to adapt to the Liverpool style this season.

Whilst Kerkez has had inconsistencies, Aurelio has also been in high praise of the Hungarian’s recent form, which certainly has been much better than before the turn of the calendar year.

“In the last few games, I’ve seen him more confident and adapting to the team. It’ll also show more now because they believe in his skills and his ability on the pitch to help the team.”

It was also nice to hear of the 46-year-old’s admiration for fellow set-piece specialist Dominik Szoboszlai. From one specialist to another on free kicks, Aurelio only has admirable praise for the Liverpool number 8’s performances this season.

“I think for me he’s been amazing this season, and obviously those goals he’s scored from the edge of the box have been outstanding. He can play different roles in the team, not just in midfield but at right back, and he can deliver a good performance, so it’s quite good to watch him play.”   The legends game brought so many ex-pros together in what Aurelio described as “rewarding” as they all reunited to raise money for the LFC foundation.

Many have also used Aurelio’s words to label Klopp’s return to Liverpool as an “honour”, with the German being at the forefront of the day between his two former clubs.

Aurelio said, “It’s been really nice, as I haven’t been back for 14 years, so to see former teammates such as Skrtel, who I played with a lot in my time here, is really good. It’s also really good to see the older generation you get to meet, spending time and getting to know them as they did their part for Liverpool. It’s really an honour to be a part of it.”

It was a day when some legends got to play at Anfield for the first time in front of over 60,000 people after the expansion of the stadium to over 61,000 fans. The day has raised over £1 million via donations, ticket sales and events that Matt Parish and the LFC Foundation team have put on, making the fundraiser a huge success in order to add to the 145,000 families and young people helped in Liverpool last year.
