The second round of the World Cup group stage ended with mixed fortunes for Flamengo’s contingent, five of nine call-ups featuring again and some now at risk.
According to Globo.com, Alex Sandro and Léo Pereira stayed on the bench in Brazil’s 3-0 win over Haiti, as did Carrascal in Colombia’s 1-0 against Congo. Arrascaeta remains out with a calf injury, missed both rounds and will also miss Spain.
Paquetá started and played 64 minutes, supplying an assist and winning the ball that began Brazil’s second goal. He controlled midfield with Bruno Guimarães, effective in and out of possession.
Danilo, one of Ancelotti’s changes, completed 90 minutes at right-back, steady and consistent. He supported the build-up with some forays, limited Haiti’s openings and cleared in the six-yard box after Alisson’s save.
Brazil top Group C on four points and will qualify with at least a draw against Scotland on Wednesday.
Uruguay complicated their position with a 2-2 draw with Cape Verde, Varela playing the full match and performing well despite one eye-catching dribble against him on a poor collective night. He has still drawn praise.
De la Cruz again came on after 25 minutes, despite speculation he might start. In a group considered straightforward, Uruguay drew with Saudi Arabia and Cape Verde, trailing in both and recovering without winning or holding on.
They are second in Group H on two points. Saudi Arabia and Cape Verde meet in the final round, while the Celeste face leaders Spain, so progression is under threat.
Ecuador’s situation is delicate. Plata played the 90 minutes against Curaçao, was in tears at the final whistle of the 0-0 and was consoled by coach Sebastián Beccacece.
He roamed and tried to create but decision-making in front of goal let him down. To qualify, Ecuador must beat leaders Germany in the last group game.
