Tomorrow night sees us host the Champions of Switzerland, BSC Young Boys in a crucial game that will most likely determine our fate in this year’s UEFA Champions League competition.
The Swiss side are having a torrid time domestically and in Europe. Indeed they have failed to pick up a single point in the six matches they have played in the competition so far, so they have nothing to lose which will make them all the more dangerous, particularly with the pressure all on ourselves.

I’m confident we will prevail though, especially if we produce the form we did against Slovan Bratislava and RB Leipzig earlier in the competition.

We’ve only ever faced the Swiss side twice before in competitive action and that was back in 1993 when we recorded a narrow victory over two legs in the first round of the UEFA Cup. Back then the Swiss side were widely known as Young Boys of Berne, and they held us to a goalless draw in Switzerland before the same scoreline was registered after the regulation 90 minutes in Glasgow meaning extra time was required.
It was a turgid game devoid of any quality, something that we were well accustomed to back then, but the breakthrough arrived in the 14th minute of extra time courtesy of an own goal by Young Boys defender Alain Baumann. That moment of fortune ensured our passage to the next round of the competition, let’s hope tomorrow night is much more straightforward than that.
