Serie A league leaders Inter were knocked out of the Champions League at the hands of Bodo/Glimt on Tuesday. Considering the first leg, the overall outcome wasn’t a massive shock but larger context suggests it was indeed an upset.
Calciomercato look at how the Nerazzurri will react to the disaster and how much they will lose out, from a financial perspective.
Cristian Chivu’s side are going to earn €65m less than how much they yielded last season. This is mainly because of the knockout and how they reached the final during Simone Inzaghi’s final campaign at the club.
Their Champions League revenue amounted for €136m last season but it is only at €71m this season.
As a result, there are plans to change the squad to adapt to the scenario. Davide Frattesi is likely to be sold and the Italian has a market in Italy and abroad. Doubts have lingered about the future of Hakan Calhanoglu and Galatasaray are expected to make an offer for him in the summer.
Prominently enough, Marcus Thuram could be sacrificed too. His form has dipped in the last few weeks, leading to Francesco Pio Esposito becoming an important part of the line-up. The Italian’s rise in stature can lead to the Frenchman’s departure.
Thuram had arrived on a free transfer and his exit will hand Inter a big capital gain too. His contract has a release clause worth €85m and this can be activated in the summer.
