Edoardo Motta’s rapid rise has reshaped Lazio since January. Signed from Reggiana for €one million, the prodigious Italian stepped straight in for the injured Ivan Provedel.
According to The Laziali, the 21-year-old had scant top-flight experience after Juventus academy days and loans to Alessandria in 2021/22 and Monza in 2022/23, where Michele Di Gregorio limited him to the Primavera.
A season-long switch to Reggiana in summer 2023 proved pivotal. After standout youth performances, he made his senior debut in August 2024, then Lazio moved in January and Maurizio Sarri promoted him to first choice in March.
Despite his age, he has started strongly in Serie A, conceding only 10 goals in his first nine league matches and keeping three clean sheets. With Provedel sidelined for the rest of the season after last month’s surgery, Motta is likely to stay first choice as Lazio push for Europe.
The league path looks closed, with Lazio 14 points behind sixth-placed Como. Continental football can now arrive only by winning the Coppa Italia.
They face new Serie A champions Inter Milan in mid-May after Motta’s semi-final heroics. He saved four penalties in the shootout following a nerve-shredding 1-1 second leg at Atalanta’s New Balance Arena, denying Scamacca, Zappacosta, Pasalic and De Ketelaere.
That surge offers a chance to end a seven-year trophy wait, even as underdogs. Motta’s composure, sharp reflexes and poise under pressure have drawn widespread praise.
He still awaits a senior Italy call-up, but debuted for the U21s in September with a clean sheet in a 1-0 win over North Macedonia. With Italy set for next summer’s tournament, co-hosted by Albania and Serbia, he will hope to convince Silvio Baldini to start him.
