After an impressive run of results in September, several members of Manchester City’s senior first-team squad embarked on international duty during the October 2025 international break.
The majority of members from the City squad participated in qualification matches for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and some even learned the fate of their respective nations ahead of next year’s showpiece competition.
In Group F, Rúben Dias, Matheus Nunes, and Bernardo Silva were present for Portugal’s matches against Ireland and Hungary, defeating the former 1-0, but struggled against the Hungarians in a 2-2 draw.
Those results mean Portugal remain in first place in their group, having won four matches and drawn two. Like Rodri’s Spain, Portugal are assured of at least a play-off berth, although they may still qualify directly for the World Cup by winning their qualification group.
In Group G, Nathan Aké and Tijjani Reijnders – courtesy of his assist in the two matches – helped the Netherlands against Malta and Finland with 4-0 victories in both outings. They now sit at the top of their group and have also secured at least a play-off berth with hopes remaining of winning the mini-league by securing more points that group rivals Poland.
Meanwhile, in Group I, Erling Haaland and Oscar Bobb played in a World Cup qualifier for Norway beating Israel by a 5-0 scoreline and a hat-trick for the Manchester City striker. The result means they sit top of their group and assured of qualification place via the play-offs or automatically. Norway also played a friendly against New Zealand, which ended 1-1.
Elsewhere in Group I, Gianluigi Donnarumma played in both of Italy’s qualification matches against Estonia and Israel claiming victories in both outings and continuing to keep pace with group rivals Norway.
In Group J, Jérémy Doku played in Belgium’s qualification games against North Macedonia and Wales, ended in a surprising 0-0 draw against the former before defeating the latter 4-2 to take the lead in their group for the first time during this qualification cycle.
Meanwhile, in Group K, John Stones, Nico O’Reilly, and James Trafford joined England for an international friendly against Wales, where the English won 3-0 before turning attentions to a 5-0 away win against Latvia to secure automatic qualification for the 2026 World Cup.
Finally, in Group L, Mateo Kovačić and Joško Gvardiol joined Croatia in their matches against Czechia and Gibraltar, held to a 0-0 draw against the Czechs and recording a 3-0 scoreline in the following match. The results meant Croatia remain first in their group and are now assured of at least a play-off berth.
Outside of UEFA qualifiers, members of City’s senior men’s squad also saw their national teams make progress in their respective qualification campaigns, with Omar Marmoush celebrating national team qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup with Egypt.
There was also a contingent of players that did not travel for international duty this month in Rayan Cherki, Rodri, Rayan Aït-Nouri and Abdukodir Khusanov through injury, while the likes of Stefan Ortega, Phil Foden, Kavin Phillips, Nico González, and Savinho were not selected.
