Another chapter in the rivalry between Chivas and Toluca is just around the corner, as the two sides prepare to face off in Guadalajara’s debut match of the Apertura 2026. In recent tournaments, Matchday 1 has brought plenty of positive results for the Red-and-White side, which will now aim to claim its 10th opening-match victory.

This match will also mark Chivas’ return to Estadio AKRON, where the team will look to make home-field advantage count, start the league campaign on the right foot and begin rewriting its recent history against Toluca. If history is any indication, fans can expect an exciting showdown.

What Has the Chivas-Toluca Rivalry Looked Like?

* The first meeting between the two clubs in the short-tournament era came on Matchday 16 of the Invierno 1996 tournament, when Chivas earned a 2-1 victory thanks to goals from Sergio “Gusano” Nápoles and Héctor Hernández.

* Following their Clausura 2026 meeting, the clubs have faced each other 79 times in Liga MX short tournaments, with only nine of those matches ending in a scoreless draw.

* Chivas and Toluca have met in four Liga MX Quarterfinal series. The most recent came in Clausura 2024, when Guadalajara advanced with a 1-0 aggregate victory.

* The clubs have also squared off in four Semifinal series (three in Liga MX and one in Copa MX). The latest came in Clausura 2017, the tournament that ended with Chivas lifting the league title.

* The only Liga MX Final between the two institutions took place in Apertura 2006, when the Rebaño won 3-2 on aggregate to capture its 11th league championship.

* No player on the current Chivas roster has previously represented Toluca.

* The list of players who have worn both jerseys is a long one. Some of the most recent examples include Isaac Brizuela, Antonio Briseño, Alexis Vega, Pavel Pérez, Jesús Angulo, Erik Gutiérrez, Víctor Guzmán, Carlos Cisneros, Aarón Galindo, Miguel Ponce and Néstor Calderón.

* Alfredo Talavera knows what it’s like to win a league title with both clubs. He was part of Toluca’s Bicentenario 2010 championship team and also belonged to the Chivas squad that defeated the Red Devils in the Apertura 2006 Final.
