Manchester City currently has 19 players out on loan across England and Europe this season. These players range from young players learning the ropes of what it takes to play professional football to players who have made a solid contribution to Manchester City’s recent success but needed a fresh start to reinvigorate their careers.
Here is a look at how the more prominent players City have sent out on loan this season have performed as the season nears the halfway point.
Grealish began the season well for Everton as he looked to revive his career, which had stalled at City with David Moyes’ side. The England international started the season superbly but his form has tapered off recently. It is highly unlikely that Jack Grealish will return to Manchester City but he’ll be hoping for a strong second half of the season to force his way into England’s World Cup squad and earn a permanent move to Everton next summer.

As Manchester City entered the 25/26 season with a plethora of centre-backs Manuel Akanji moved to Inter Milan on loan for this season. The Swiss international has become a mainstay of the Inter defence this campaign. Akanji has performed strongly in Serie A and the Champions League this season and looks set to earn a permanent move to Inter at the end of the season.

Although Girona have struggled this season, Vitor Reis has shown that he could become the future of Manchester City’s defence in La Liga. Reis has been one of, if not, the best young centre-back in Spain’s top flight this season. Playing regularly at Girona has allowed him to grow as a player and adapt to the physicality of playing in Europe. Based on how he has fared in a struggling Girona side this season a big future awaits Vitor Reis at Manchester City.

The idea of Claudio Echeverri playing in the Bundesliga for Leverkusen and the Champions League was sound on paper. The reality was very different. Echeverri spent his time in Germany on the periphery of the Leverkusen squad. He barely made an impact in Germany and his loan spell will be cut short. He is set to move to Girona for the second half of the season and will be hoping that he can salvage something from what has been a disappointing season for a player with so much talent and potential.

The young centre-back joined OGC Nice on loan for this season. Juma Bah has established himself as a mainstay in the Nice defence. His strength in the air and in a challenge have impressed this season. Bah has been improving on the ball which is a good sign to see. At times Bah has been inconsistent which is to be expected of a player so young. But he is continuing to develop and show promising signs that he could become a quality centre-back in time.

After signing a contract extension with Manchester City, Max Alleyne was sent out on loan to the Championship to spend this season with Watford. At times, Alleyne’s class on the ball and defensive talent and acumen has caught the eye. He has had spells out of the Watford first-team at times as well. But the main thing is that Alleyne has shown that he should have a good career ahead of him as a centre-back. If he can continue to grow as a player across the second half of this season Alleyne will have had a productive loan spell away from City.
Appearances: 14 in all competitions.
After signing for Manchester City in the summer, Sverre Nypan was sent out on loan to Middlesbrough. The idea was that Nypan could learn the English game in a tough competition. There have been signs shown by Nypan of the incredible talent he has. He has all of the traits needed to develop into a quality midfielder in time. There have been flashes of quality shown by Nypan at Middlesbrough rather than a sustained run of performances.
Nypan has predominantly been used as a substitute at Boro. That isn’t a major cause for concern as this season is a learning experience for Nypan. It is hoped that Nypan can play more minutes across the second half of the season but he is learning what the English game is about which is exactly what he needs at his age.

Simpson-Pusey looked ready to take the next step in his career when he left Manchester City for a loan spell in Scotland with Celtic. That hasn’t occurred. Simpson-Pusey has only made one appearance for the Celtic first-team this season. His other appearance came in Celtic’s reserve side. Arriving at Celtic being injured set the young defender back and his season has never recovered. The young centre-back has barely played and as of right now his time in Scotland hasn’t had the desired results. Celtic’s issues this season haven’t helped Simpson-Pusey’s cause but so far this season has been a disappointment for the young defender.
Appearances: 2 in all competitions, one with the Celtic first-team.
A season on loan at Stoke City in the Championship was the next step in the development of Divin Mubama. The young striker started this season strongly with two goals in his first two games in the Championship. After his impressive start, the goals dried up for Mubama. He did score an impressive hat trick in Stoke City’s 5-1 win over Bristol City at the beginning of November. Unfortunately, Mubama hasn’t scored since that match and he is learning what it takes to play in the Championship and as a professional in England. It is hoped that Mubama can get back amongst the goals soon as he has obvious talent but I can’t see him becoming a first-team player at Manchester City.
