With the World Cup on every fan’s mind, one of the tournament’s biggest pleasant surprises was the performance of Cape Verde and its 41-year-old goalkeeper, Vozinha Dias.
In recent days, rumors have spread that Inter Miami is looking to bring the veteran goalkeeper into their squad.
According to several outlets, Vozinha could be closer than many would expect to joining the Herons.
The real question here is: If this rumour turns out to be true, how would the Herons' lineup be for the second part of the regular season?
First, let's make the veteran goalkeeper's situation clear before looking at the possible lineups.
According to these reports, the deal between Inter Miami and the Cape Verdean shot-stopper is virtually complete, with only the final details needing to be resolved before an official announcement.
The African goalkeeper would join the Herons as a free agent after parting ways with Portuguese club GD Chaves. Now that we have established the scenario of this report, let’s jump into the lineups.
Also, if someone didn’t know, Casemiro has been confirmed to have a verbal agreement with Inter Miami. So we have to take him into account (hypothetically).
Let’s be honest: Inter Miami already has several quality goalkeepers on its roster. This season, Dayne St. Clair has been the starting goalkeeper, while Rocco Ríos Novo played one match before the World Cup.
With that in mind, Vozinha would be expected to serve as the Herons’ third- or fourth-choice goalkeeper and receive almost no playing time, except when the other midweek competitions begin, which will increase the workload and force the team to rotate its lineup.
My first lineup would be: Dayne St.Clair; Allen, Falcon, Lujan, Fray; Casemiro, De Paul, Bright; Allende, Lionel Messi, Germán Berterame.
This would be the Heron’s usual lineup with some players rotating, such as Allende with Segovia or Suarez with Berterame.
The other lineup I could see Inter Miami’s coach, Ángel Guillermo Hoyos, use is: Vozinha, Allen, Falcon, Lujan, Mura; Ayala, De Paul, Bright, Segovia, Silvetti; Messi.
Although this could be the second lineup, we have to acknowledge that Aviles will return from his loan with CF Montreal. Also in the offense, Suarez or Silvetti could be used alongside Lionel Messi.
However, there is still one thing I don’t understand about bringing Vozinha to the roster: he wouldn’t have a single minute on the pitch with St.Clair and Novos.
I believe the good side is that he arrives as a free agent, so it’s not that bad.
Nevertheless, if one thing this sport has taught over the years, it's never say never.
