‘How long’ – Paul Scholes has key Erik ten Hag tactical concern

Former Manchester United star Paul Scholes has expressed his concern on the style of football played under Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag.

Pressure is mounting on the Manchester United boss after last weekend’s 3-0 defeat to Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford.

It has been a poor start to the season with the Red Devils sitting 13th in the table with only seven points on the board with a -3 goal difference.

Ten Hag has recently denied that he is concerned about his future and insists he is focused on turning things around at Old Trafford.

It is commonly understood that the next two fixtures against FC Porto and Aston Villa this week will be a big factor in the future of the former Ajax manager.

Paul Scholes unsure on Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United identity

Scholes has revealed that he is concerned that Ten Hag is unable to coach the team to the required standards, with a lack of progress in style a huge concern for the former Red Devil.

Speaking in an interview with the Mirror, Scholes said: “I’m not sure about giving a timescale,” he said when asked how long he’d give before Ten Hag’s gone as speculation continues to swirl. “I’ve certainly said before that I’ve never asked for a manager to be sacked, it’s not a nice thing. But, you do wonder how long this can keep on going on.

“I think the big thing from me and other people who’ve been at the club and fans, more importantly, they want to see a little bit of direction, a style of play that they can get behind. And I don’t think at this point we’re anywhere close to seeing a direction.

“I’ve also said before that when Liverpool won the league, when Man City won the league, you could feel something happening for them, like 3 or 4 years before that. It just doesn’t feel like we’re getting anywhere near, it feels like we’re getting further away rather than closer to where the club should be.”
