Cardiff City have confirmed the number of tickets sold ahead of Tuesday evening's mouth-watering EFL Cup home clash against Chelsea

Cardiff City will be vying to execute a major upset over Premier League giants Chelsea when Enzo Maresca's side travel to the Welsh capital for Tuesday evening's EFL Cup quarter-final tie.

The Bluebirds overcame League Two opposition in Swindon Town and Cheltenham at home before clinching impressive successive away victories over two opponents of higher divisions in the form of Burnley and Welsh rivals Wrexham, winning 2-1 at Turf Moor and the Stok Cae Ras respectively to make it all the way to the final eight.

Cardiff, who have not made it this far in any cup competition since their run to the EFL Cup final against Liverpool in 2012, are the only team outside the Premier League entering the quarter-final stage, despite having suffered relegation from the Championship to League One last season.

Brian Barry-Murphy's side find themselves motoring at the summit of the league table, with a thrilling 4-3 win at home to Doncaster Rovers on Saturday afternoon opening up a four-point gap between the Bluebirds and second-placed Bradford City.

In league action, Cardiff are currently enjoying a five-match winning streak and will be hoping to translate that form into the fixture against reigning Club World Cup winners Chelsea, who returned to victorious ways by seeing past David Moyes' Everton over the weekend.

It's a huge encounter for Cardiff, with all connected to the Bluebirds relishing the opportunity of seeing the side compete against one of the country's best - and the chance of a huge cup upset is a thoroughly exciting prospect.

Cardiff have confirmed that the fixture will be a sell-out, with all tickets in both the home sections and away end having been snapped up heading into what represents a mouth-watering cup tie for both outfits.

The Bluebirds revealed that the encounter is set to be a sell-out affair on Monday afternoon, thanking fans for their support ahead of a game in which Cardiff will need exactly that more than ever in order to stand a chance of overcoming the two-time UEFA Champions League winners.

Cardiff City Stadium boasts a capacity of 33,280, with the visitors having been handed an allocation of 3,239.

Some supporters, it must be said, have been quick to point out the number of fans poised to be in attendance who haven't regularly attended home fixtures for the Bluebirds this season.

It's a valid point, considering that Cardiff regularly pull in home attendances between the figures of 17,000-20,000 - still impressive numbers for League One - and more diehard supporters may feel bittersweet about attending a sell-out cup fixture against a top-flight heavyweight when that level of attendance has not been welcomed since the Bluebirds were last in the Premier League during the 2018/19.

Nonetheless, it proves how much this encounter means to everybody in the Welsh capital and beyond, and Cardiff will need a bouyant atmosphere to spur them on when Maresca's men roll into town.

Chelsea's last visit to Cardiff City was eventful - EFL Cup tie will have added spice

Those who regularly follow Cardiff will recall Chelsea's last visit to this corner of South Wales, which created one of the more iconic moments of recent Premier League history while playing a fateful role in the Bluebirds' eventual relegation from the Premier League.

On 31st March 2019, with just eight games remaining to try and secure their top-flight status for a second season, Cardiff played host to Chelsea.

The Bluebirds had raced into the lead through Spanish midfielder Victor Camarasa early into the second half and looked good value to clinch all three points, only for Cesar Azpilicueta to equalise with six minutes to spare.

Azpilicueta's goal, of course, was notably offside by some margin, and left supporters and players alike incensed. Those woes were compounded when Ruben Loftus-Cheek struck a winner for Chelsea in added time, with then-manager Neil Warnock infamously staring down the officials who had allowed Azpilicueta's goal to stand in a bizarre post-match moment.

Warnock, mind you, was right to feel aggreived, and with Cardiff subsequently finishing two points shy of safety, a victory over Chelsea could've made a world of difference and, had Azpilicueta's goal been rightfully ruled out instead, one can only wonder what could've been.

That was more than six years ago now, and as we prepare for the next meeting between the two sides, Cardiff will be hoping to avoid falling foul of such controversy and misfortune once more, and will be licking their lips at the prospect of striking some sort of revenge over Chelsea.
