Leeds United cult-hero Mark Viduka has posted his reaction to Leeds' recently confirmed automatic promotion to the Premier League.
Former Leeds United striker Mark Viduka has reacted to Leeds’ automatic promotion back to the Premier League being mathematically confirmed on Easter Monday.
The Yorkshiremen hammered Stoke City by six goals to nil at Elland Road on Monday but had to wait for Burnley to defeat Sheffield United later in the day at Turf Moor before knowing for certain they would be in the top-flight.
Supporters had stayed around the ground and players, much like was the case under Marcelo Bielsa when they gained promotion in the 2019/20 season, began the party in Elland Road – and one of Leeds’ heroes from yesteryear, Viduka, clearly remains attached to the club.
The former Australia international took to his Instagram account to share in Leeds’ supporters joy with a post that had no caption but simply showed the Leeds badge on the 2021/22 United kit.
Viduka’s affection for the club and the city has been clear, stating in the past that he was glad he didn’t sign for Manchester United at one stage and that “I think I loved living in Leeds too much at the time.”
The 49-year-old, who also went on to play for Middlesbrough and Newcastle United in England, was a fan favourite at Elland Road with an extremely impressive scoring record, notching 73 times in 166 appearances for the Whites.
During his spell at the club between 2000 and 2004, where he was apparently the subject of interest from Man United as well as AC Milan, he scored more goals for Leeds than anyone else in his career.
Leeds were relegated in the 2003/04 Premiership campaign, Viduka’s final season at the club, despite Viduka once again hitting double figures in the league that season, with a team supposedly ‘too good to go down’.
Now that they have gained promotion back to the top-flight for just the second time in the 21 years since that heartache, their focus will still remain on the Championship for the final two games of the campaign as they chase the second-tier title.
Leeds have won three top-flight titles as well as the second division on four occasions so they will be keen to add an eighth league trophy to their cabinet as they currently hold off Burnley on goal difference.
On the penultimate day of the campaign, Burnley go to Loftus Road to face mid-table Queens Park Rangers, whilst Leeds host top six contenders Bristol City before then facing relegation-battling Plymouth Argyle, who did them a favour a few weeks ago with a dramatic come from behind victory over Sheffield United, at Home Park on the final day as the Clarets host play-off chasing Millwall.
