According to Alan Nixon, the forward is keen on a move to Hillsborough, with the club seeking additions that could improve Henrik Pedersen’s side.

The South Yorkshire outfit were capable of only two signings during the summer transfer window, with financial issues limiting their ability to bolster the squad.

Ethan Horvath and Harry Amass both joined on loan due in exceptional circumstances approved by the EFL, but a number of key players departed amid multiple instances of late payments of wages.

Here, we use estimated figures from Capology to see how much Sheffield Wednesday may need to pay Watmore, if a deal does materialise...

Watmore signed for Millwall in the 2023 January transfer window, making the switch from Championship rivals Middlesbrough.

During his two-and-a-half seasons at The Den, he contributed 11 goals and three assists from 76 appearances in the Championship.

The Lions finished eighth, 13th and eighth in that period, narrowly missing out on a play-off place on two occasions.

Watmore was on an estimated weekly wage worth £10,000during his time with the London outfit, making him a middle of the range earner at the club last season.

Millwall’s estimated highest paid player during the 2024/25 campaign was Japhet Tanganga, with the defender reportedly receiving £35,000 per week after leaving Tottenham.

It was at Sunderland where Watmore broke into senior football following a transfer from non-league Altrincham, with the forward earning a weekly salary estimated at £15,000 when they were competing in the Championship.

While he initially earned his place in the team in the Premier League, he struggled for minutes as the team dropped down to League One, leading to a move to Middlesbrough.

When Watmore was competing in the second tier for Boro, he was estimated to be receiving £13,846-a-week, with the team narrowly missing out in their push for a play-off place.

If Sheffield Wednesday are going to push for the signing of Watmore, then they will need to be granted permission by the EFL to confirm his contract.

The loan deals involving Horvath and Amass were more straightforward due to the lack of payment involved and the former being an emergency goalkeeper option, whereas Watmore will need to receive a deal to play.

Last season, the highest-paid player in the current squad is Barry Bannan - the veteran midfielder was on a contract worth an estimated £25,000 per week, but when his deal expired, he was unable to sign on similar terms due to EFL restrictions.

Bannan was only able to sign a fresh contract worth a maximum of £7,000 a week due to their restrictions, whilst both Middlesbrough and Millwall were willing to pay three times that figure to the Scotsman, as per The Times.

Yan Valery is estimated to be the best paid member of the first-team squad, with the defender receiving £20,000 per week, along with the likes of Nathaniel Chalobah, Dominic Iorfa and Iké Ugbo.

However, while these players are all on more than what Watmore earned at Millwall, there are no guarantees they will be able to afford even the £10,000-a-week that he received at The Den.

It remains to be seen whether Sheffield Wednesday will be able to get this deal through, with uncertainty still surrounding the owner Dejphon Chansiri.
