Matchday eight of the UEFA Champions League’s league phase was not a memorable one for Real Madrid or the club faithful as Los Blancos crashed out from a spot of comfort to a playoff fight.
Comfortably nested in third place ahead of the matchday, all they needed was to avoid defeat to qualify for the Round of 16 directly without playoffs.
Playing in Lisbon, however, they crashed to a 4-2 defeat to Jose Mourinho’s Benfica, losing their spot in the top-8 and signing up for two additional games instead.
As confirmed in a recent update by MARCA, Real Madrid’s winnings from the league phase of the competition have also taken a blow with the defeat last night.
Real Madrid earned a sum of €18.6 million for merely participating in the competition, as did every other club in the event. In addition, UEFA offers €2.1 million for a win and €700,000 for a draw – taking Real Madrid’s winnings in that sense to €10.5 million.
The third component of their winnings is based on the position they finished on the leaderboard, and finishing ninth fetches them €8.81 million.

A fourth component of €13 million was handed to all clubs who directly qualified for the knockouts, but Real Madrid missed out on that entire sum as it stands, taking their grand total to €37.93 million.
Crashing from third to ninth, thus, saw them lose out financially in three of the four payment fractions.
Had they finished third with a win, they would have earned an additional €2.1 million for the result, close to €2 million more for the position and an added €13 million for the progression to the knockouts.
Arsenal finish the group stage as the highest earners with eight wins in as many games and a total pay check of €60 million.
Barcelona, meanwhile, leapfrogged to fifth place with a win on the night and took home €52.89 million – close to €15 million more.
