The full-back has been part of Premier League squads in seven of the last eight seasons, and his contract reflects that

Charlie Taylor was an integral part of the Burnley side under Sean Dyche in the Premier League, and even played a large part in the top flight under Vincent Kompany, too.

His performances across his seven-year spell at Turf Moor warranted a place at a Premier League side upon his departure from Burnley at the end of the 2023/24 season after the Clarets were relegated to the second tier for the second time in three seasons.

However, his time at St Mary’s Stadium has been a disaster so far, with a plethora of injuries limiting his time on the field, and despite Southampton readying up for a season in the Championship in 2025/26, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Taylor was allowed to leave the club this summer.

Samuel Seaman revealed that the 31-year-old may be an option for Norwich City this summer, as the Canaries look to return to the Championship’s top six under Liam Manning this season.

They may not have to spend too much in terms of a transfer fee to acquire his services, but Taylor has been on a Premier League-level wage for quite some time now, so Norwich may need to go above and beyond their expectations to get the left-back on board at Carrow Road this season.

Charlie Taylor's current estimated weekly wage

Per Capology’s estimates, Charlie Taylor’s weekly wage at Southampton amounts to £30,000 per week, a number which is projected to stay the same despite the Saints being relegated to the second tier at the end of last season.

The estimation reveals that Taylor earned that amount in his final year at Burnley as well. Before that, he earned an estimated £25,000 per week for the six years he spent at Turf Moor since his 2017 move from Leeds United.

£30,000 ranks in the middle of the pack for Southampton when it comes to how much they pay their players per week. A number of players are estimated to earn more, with Aaron Ramsdale topping the charts at a staggering £120,000 per week.

The likes of Ramsdale and Joe Aribo (who earns £70,000 per week) are likely to see their imminent future away from the Championship, so Will Still’s side should be set to offload those wages before the end of the current transfer window, but also freeing up Taylor’s £30,000 per week would be a sensible option, too, as Southampton aim to improve the squad and return to the Premier League as soon as possible.

Charlie Taylor would need to accept less money per week if he were to sign for Norwich City

Having spent 12 of the last 13 seasons in the Premier League, Southampton are well positioned to throw money at players to convince them to come to the club.

Unfortunately for Norwich, who are about to embark on their fourth straight season in the Championship, they cannot afford to do so.

Capology estimates that only Jack Stacey and Shane Duffy earn equal to, or more than, Charlie Taylor currently. Borja Sainz, who was the Canaries’ best player last season, was estimated to earn just £15,000 per week during the 2024/25 campaign.

So, if Norwich’s reported interest in Charlie Taylor is to be pursued, then Liam Manning will be hoping that the 31-year-old can accept quite a bit less per week than what he was earning at Southampton.

And if Taylor can be persuaded to do so, and if he can rediscover his fitness after a stop/start 2024/25 campaign, then perhaps Norwich will have themselves a top-quality full-back in their quest to replicate 2023/24’s top-six finish.
