Josh Sargent signed a new contract which upped his wages at Norwich City shortly after the departure of the Icelandic striker Teemu Pukki for MLS.

Norwich City have been fortunate to have two iconic strikers in the form of Teemu Pukki and Josh Sargent.

In the current season, Norwich City have had a difficult start to their 2025-26 Championship campaign. But one of the few brighter spots for the club this year has been their ability to retain the services of Sargent.

There had been considerable speculation that the American international striker could be set to leave Carrow Road over the course of the summer, but Sargent has stayed, and his contribution in front of goal has prevented their start to the season from being even worse than it has been, including scoring five league goals for them in nine matches so far, including the all-important second goal in their 2-1 win at Portsmouth in August and both goals in their 2-0 win at Blackburn at the end of that month.

Sargent signed for Norwich from the Bundesliga club Werder Bremen in 2021, and his arrival at Carrow Road coincided with the peak years of another Norwich striker who's since flown the Canaries' nest.

Here's how Sargent's wages compare to the striker whose boots he'd end up filling at Carrow Road, Teemu Pukki.

Capology estimate that for the 2021-22 season, the first season that Josh Sargent played for Norwich City, Teemu Pukki's wage at Norwich City was £25,000-a-week. At that time, Sargent's wage was an estimated £12,115-a-week,

Sargent's income, however, took a significant bump up when Pukki left the club for Minnesota United in MLS in 2023. The Icelandic striker left at the end of the 2022-23 season, and in October 2023 Sargent signed a contract extension with the Canaries which increased his wage to the £25,000-a-week that Pukki had been on prior to his departure. This new contract tied Sargent to the club until the summer of 2028.

It is notable that Josh Sargent's salary was bumped up to the amount that Teemu Pukki had been on prior to leaving the club, because there is little question that the Icelandic striker is still considered Norwich royalty, more than two years after his departure from the club.

Pukki first joined Norwich in June 2018, and ended up staying with the club for five years. When Sargent signed for the Canaries in 2021, Norwich had just been promoted back to the Premier League, and Pukki had been instrumental in that happening, with 26 league goals making him the third-highest goalscorer in the Championship throughout the 2020-21 season, behind Ivan Toney of Brentford and Adam Armstrong of Blackburn Rovers.

Sargent was only 21-years-old when he first signed for the club, and this will have been a factor in his wages being substantially lower than his new strike partner's. Norwich were relegated straight back to the Championship at the end of the 2021-22 season, with Pukki scoring 11 times for them in the league, while Sargent scored eight.

The following season was an extremely disappointing one for Norwich, who could only finish 13th in the Championship. But this was also the last season that Pukki and Sargent were at the club at the time, and this time it was the American who got the higher tally of League goals, netting 13 times in comparison with Pukki's 10 goals.

Norwich haven't seriously challenged for a return to the Premier League since then beyond getting hammered by Leeds in their 2024 play-off semi-final, but Sargent has become an increasingly important and influential player in their first team over that time. He's hit double-figures for them in each of the last two seasons, with 16 League goals in 2023-24 and 15 in 2024-25, and the handful he's scored already this season has indicated that he should be on course to get close to that number again.

The Canaries had a fight to keep hold of Sargent during the summer, and his goalscoring record demonstrates why. Even in a team that has not been performing as fans would have hoped, he has kept scoring goals for them. In this respect, Norwich couldn't have asked for a better successor to the Carrow Road hero Pukki.
