An insight into the potential knock-on effect of the return to fitness of Barcelona star Marc-André ter Stegen on teammate Wojciech Szczęsny’s situation at the club has on Monday been provided.

The name of goalkeeper Ter Stegen has of course taken its place front and centre in the headlines in Catalunya’s capital across the day to date.

This comes after the German international, sidelined since all the way back in September owing to a serious knee injury, took a significant step back towards a return to the pitch.

Ter Stegen played his part in group training alongside the rest of Hansi Flick’s squad at The Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper this morning.

Taking as much into consideration, it is now looking increasingly likely that the German will be back available for selection before the season is out.

Such a situation could leave Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick in something of a pickle, with Ter Stegen his true no.1, but Wojciech Szczęsny shining in the 32-year-old’s absence.

Those of a Blaugrana persuasion eager to see the latter maintain his place between the posts through the close of the campaign, though, need not fret.

This comes amid confirmation on the part of Marca that:

‘If Ter Stegen returns this season, the captain’s return will be practically symbolic, but next season there will be serious competition between the posts.’
