Recent form

Chelsea’s season has shifted dramatically in recent weeks.

After being spoken about as potential title contenders and seeing Enzo Maresca win the Premier League’s Manager of the Month award in November, the Blues have taken just one win from their last nine league matches, leading to a slide down the table and Maresca’s departure.

New head coach Liam Rosenior now takes charge, with the FA Cup offering an immediate opportunity to build momentum. Chelsea are chasing a ninth FA Cup triumph and their first since lifting the trophy in 2018.

The Blues also boast an outstanding record against lower-league opposition in the competition, having progressed from 61 of their last 63 such ties, including each of the last 22.

Charlton arrive in poor form, sitting 19th in the Championship after winning just two of their last 14 league games.

They are without a win in four matches and hover five points above the relegation zone. The Addicks have also won just one of their last 11 meetings with Chelsea in all competitions.

What’s been said

Speaking in his first press conference as manager, Rosenior said: “We have some outstanding, talented players with huge potential. I’m very excited to fit into this group.

“At a club of this stature, the fans want success, and they have every right to want success now. My job is to win over the fans, and that means winning football matches.

“It’s about hard work, determination and spirit. We’re trying to build things here in a different way, and I’m very confident that, in time, we will show everyone why we have chosen to do it this way.”

Charlton boss Nathan Jones also spoke ahead of the third round, saying he is “really looking forward” to the fixture.

He highlighted the “romance” of the FA Cup and the possibility of “giant killings” as a major source of inspiration for his players.
