Chelsea got off to the perfect start in the tournament last time out against MLS side LAFC, after goals from Pedro Neto and Enzo Fernandez secured a 2-0 win. New signing Liam Delap was a second half substitute for Enzo Maresca’s side and picked up an assist.
Flamengo also got their Club World Cup campaign off to a winning start, beating Tunisian side ES Tunis 2-0. The Brazilian side had beaten Fortaleza 5-0 in their final league match before heading to the United States.
Flamengo (4-2-3-1): Rossi; Varela, Ortiz, Pereira, Ayrton Lucas; Pulgar, Jorginho; Gerson, De Arrascaeta, Luiz Araujo; Pedro.
Chelsea (4-2-3-1): Sanchez; Acheampong, Chalobah, Colwill, Gusto; Fernandez, Santos; George, Palmer, Madueke; Delap.
Chelsea midfielder Andrey Santos on potentially making his debut against Flamengo and wanting to make an impact at the club: “When we talk about Chelsea, we have to work to win every competition. In two years a lot of things have happened. Now I have my son, I’m married, my whole life has changed. I have more experience, and I think I can be ready for the huge challenge.”
Former Chelsea defender and now Flamengo boss Filipe Luis: Chelsea as a model. “We watched them during the season, they are a reference and a model of play for us coaches to copy.
“They are a team with a perfect tactical model, with many solutions for all types of pressure and I would say that all teams suffer from high individual pressure and playing in closed defences.
“Any club in the European elite has mechanisms and individual solutions to overcome these adversities. We are going to play a game against an elite team and it is a privilege for us. We believe that we will have possibilities.”
