NJ/NY Gotham FC has had a big week.  The team announced the move to Etihad Park in Queens in 2028, subsequently declaring that they are truly a part of New York and New Jersey.  The team’s training center will be in the Garden State, and they have already committed to giving back to the local area and focusing on development.  For some, the move was welcomed, and for others, it was upsetting.

Alas, fans will have to wait to voice their support or disdain in person for at least one more match.  Gotham will take on Utah Royals FC on the road, continuing the tough start to the resumption of the NWSL season.  The Bats might have won the NWSL Challenge Cup against the Kansas City Current, but their first regular-season game back saw the ladies fall to San Diego Wave FC.  It was not the best start, but at least now Utah will give the NJ/NY team a feel for where they are.

Again, the schedule is full of difficult opponents, and Utah is no different.  They have somewhat turned into a wonderful surprise after struggling last year.  Now, the Royals sit in fourth place in the NWSL standings and are putting out worthwhile performances.  Therefore, the Bats must play more closely to how they played in the Challenge Cup compared to last weekend.

Moreover, when the teams last met, the game ended in a 0-0 draw.  Gotham FC will want to secure three points this time around and remind the Royals why they have not beaten the NJ/NY team since rejoining the NWSL in 2024.  It would also be nice to pick up a road win.

Any new players, in this case, Sam Kerr, cannot be available yet to play.  Gotham FC and the other NWSL teams must wait until the summer transfer window opens.  In the meantime, the ladies are talented enough that they can beat Utah.  Really, Friday’s game will come down to how they play.
