FLW's Huddersfield Town fan pundit is more than happy to take a look at Kyreece Lisbie after a breakout year in the EFL

Huddersfield Town are once again looking to make a splash in the transfer market to increase their chances of getting back into the Championship.

The Terriers are set to begin their third straight campaign in League One in August. Despite promotion ambitions and the financial backing to make those a reality, the West Yorkshire side has failed to even finish in the play-offs since their third-tier return.

This year has to be different. With the ownership moving down an alternative managerial hiring route, promoting Martin Drury from within, their recruitment model may be taking a different route, too.

Last summer saw numerous players arrive at the Accu Stadium from Championship clubs. So far this year, though, Huddersfield have recruited Ashley Fletcher from fellow League One side Blackpool, and they're interested in bringing in Kyreece Lisbie from fourth-tier outfit Colchester United, as revealed exclusively revealed by Football League World.

The Terriers face stiff competition from the likes of Sheffield Wednesday and Oxford United, two other promotion hopefuls in the third tier, which outlines how highly-rated the 22-year-old is off the back of a breakout year in the EFL, scoring 11 and providing five assists under ex-Town boss Danny Cowley.

Quite a few critics felt that, last summer, Huddersfield were focused more on the name of the signing, rather than where they fit in the side.

Their recruitment didn't exactly favour the system that the Terriers played under Lee Grant or even Liam Manning, which ultimately led to their ninth-placed finish. They didn't have many established wide threats, despite opting to play with wide players.

FLW's Huddersfield fan pundit, Graeme Rayner, welcomed the idea of bringing in someone like Lisbie to establish a natural threat on the right-hand side ahead of next season.

"One thing that was glaringly obvious last year at the club was that we lacked natural width, especially on the right," he explained.

"We shoe-horned players in there. Ben Wiles, while he was at the club, played wide right despite being a central midfielder, similarly with Marcus Harness. If we're going to play a system that requires someone to play on the right in an attacking position, we need to recruit probably two players.

"Kyreece Lisbie had what appears to be a breakout year last season. 11 goals and eight assists in all competitions and played over 50 games, so he is clearly a strong, young player.

"He played at League Two level, so it would be a step-up, but I would say that, from what I know of him, he's an exciting prospect, but it depends on who we plan our main strikers to be and what style of play would suit them, as Lisbie is one of the more modern ilk of strikers who likes to cut in and shoot."

With the likes of Fletcher and Bojan Radulovic at the club, two tall strikers who can challenge for balls in the air, and Alfie May and Joe Taylor still present, who thrive off of low balls to feet that they can turn into goals, Rayner believes that whoever their new wide option is has to be good at creating chances.

The fact that Lisbie scored more than he assisted last season indicates that he may be a score-first winger, but his eight assists in all competitions provide optimism that he could be a top facilitator, too.

After all, the 22-year-old is far from being the finished product. So if the Terriers can cultivate a winger who can register 10–15 assists out of the Colchester man, Rayner is more than happy to take a look at him.

"What we appear to be doing with our strikers at the moment, with the signing of Fletcher, with Radulovic, May and, if he stays, Joe Taylor, we want balls into the box," he continued.

"So, if he can add that to his game, and perhaps he already has it, judging by the number of assists he got last season, then absolutely."

Huddersfield have had recent success with bringing in wingers from lower levels and overseeing their development into a top Championship wideman, as seen through Sorba Thomas, who arrived from National League side Boreham Wood in 2021.

The Welshman was their creative spark in their second-tier play-off run in 2021/22, and after leaving off the back of their relegation to League One, first on loan to Nantes and then to Stoke City, he registered 10 goals and 11 assists for the Potters in the second tier last season.

Rayner admits that Huddersfield haven't replaced Thomas in the two years since their League One return, and backs Lisbie, who has reps in non-league with Cray Valley PM and Braintree Town, to follow in his footsteps.

"He seems to be the sort of signing that we've made successfully over the years," the fan pundit added. "Someone from the lower level who steps up to grow in value and be a real positive force in the team.

"The last player we had who played there regularly and contributed assists was Sorba Thomas, who has gone on to achieve great things at Stoke. We needed to replace him, but we never really did.

"I'd be more than happy to have a look at Lisbie, or someone like him. He's only young at 22 and probably in our price bracket, too, as I'd suspect he's not hugely expensive."

If a winger does come from the lower leagues to the Accu Stadium this summer, EFL fans will immediately be drawing comparisons to Thomas.

If Lisbie can live up to those expectations and be the driving force out wide when it comes to creating chances, Huddersfield fans would be more than happy, and therefore may be urging the higher-ups at the club to really push for the deal ahead of the likes of Sheffield Wednesday and Oxford.
