With Martin Drury and Jon Stead replacing Liam Manning, there is pressure on Huddersfield Town to get into the play-offs at least in 2026/27, having finished 10th and ninth in their seasons after relegation.

Huddersfield already have the foundations of a strong League One side, with the experience and quality of the likes of Ryan Ledson, Marcus Harness, and Bali Mumba providing an encouraging platform to build from.

All three have proven themselves at a higher level and should be among the division's standout players if they perform to their capabilities.

Ashley Fletcher also looks like a sensible first signing of the summer, adding another experienced option in attack with plenty of EFL pedigree.

However, that addition is not nearly going to be enough if the Terriers are serious about challenging for promotion after consecutive disappointing campaigns.

At the time of writing, Fletcher remains their only summer arrival, and Drury will need further reinforcements across the squad. The core is certainly there, but Huddersfield require greater depth and competition for places if they are to compete with the likes of Leicester City, Sheffield Wednesday, Bradford City, Luton Town and more at the top end of League One.

Now it appears that they are leading the race for another new face with experience in the third tier of English football. Brentford signed Ethan Brierley from Rochdale back in 2023, and he spent 2025/26 with Exeter City.

Despite their relegation, Brierley impressed in his 47 appearances for Exeter (39 starts), providing a goal and four assists from midfield. Huddersfield are interested in the midfielder and could be set to make him their second signing of the summer after Fletcher.

Journalist Pete O'Rourke states that Huddersfield are leading the race to sign Brierley after the 22-year-old impressed on loan at Exeter last season.

He adds that a number of EFL clubs have shown an interest in Brierley, but it is Huddersfield that are determined to land the player for 2026/27.

It's unclear as of yet if this is another loan for the Brentford player or if Huddersfield are set to bring the Rochdale academy product in on a permanent basis for their promotion battle.

Huddersfield are certainly not lacking experience. The likes of Lynden Gooch, Murray Wallace, Fletcher, Ledson, and Harness, have all played extensively in League One, the Championship, and above. It gives Drury a solid foundation of know-how and leadership.

However, the Terriers arguably need to complement that experienced core with more young, high-upside players who can develop into valuable assets over time. Recruiting younger permanent signings alongside talented Premier League loanees should therefore be a priority.

Leo Castledine demonstrated the impact that profile of player can have during the first half of his loan spell from Chelsea in 2025/26 before returning in January, adding so much quality and attacking impetus. Town now need more players of that ilk to raise the squad's ceiling.
