FLW takes a look at the latest news in the Terriers' search for another head coach

Huddersfield Town are yet to confirm Liam Manning’s replacement.

The 40-year-old former Bristol City and Norwich boss officially left Kirklees on 11th May, with the full support of Kevin Nagle, two months after stepping back from first-team duties to take compassionate leave.

Manning had only taken charge of Town in January, replacing the sacked Lee Grant, and had been appointed on what the club described as a "long‑term contract".

Nevertheless, it leaves Huddersfield preparing for a third consecutive season in League One without a permanent head coach in place, so the pressure to get this one right has rarely felt bigger.

1 ? ? What Kevin Nagle has actually said about Huddersfield Town's manager search

Nagle offered Town fans a brief update on said proceedings via his X account on May 19th.

When questioned by a supporter about how much time it’s been since Manning's exit, Nagle pushed back by asking, "Don't you want a thorough process?" before adding it was, "Close. Fluid situation though."

It is a response that tells you almost everything and nothing at the same time. The process is ongoing, but there is at least some optimism that a decision is coming soon.

Nagle did not set any specific timeline, which at least suggests the club are not rushing into an appointment for the sake of it.

What we do know is that sporting director Chris Markham has spoken previously, as per Terrier Spirit, about wanting a clear style of play at the club.

2 ? ? Martin Drury and Jon Stead may still be offered the Huddersfield Town job

Earlier this month, Football Insider reported that the club were set to offer joint caretakers Martin Drury and Jon Stead the manager's job on a permanent basis.

However, as things stand, nothing has been confirmed publicly, and the situation remains unresolved.

Drury and Stead stepped into the role when Manning first left late and, across their seven games in caretaker charge, oversaw two wins, four draws and one defeat.

Their record and connection to the area has clearly made an impression. Yes, both are Huddersfield men who understand the club well, but some fans will still want proven experience and not another Lee Grant experiment.

Grant, now at League Two side Walsall, had never properly managed before being appointed Terriers' boss in May 2025, and it didn't work out for him at all.

That said, the Football Insider report has not been officially denied by the club either, which keeps the door open.

3 ? ? Kevin Nagle's Huddersfield Town manager search cannot be rushed

Since Carlos Corberan left in the summer of 2022, Huddersfield have gone through a concerning number of managerial changes - whether that be temporary or permanent.

As per transfermarkt, there's been Danny Schofield, Mark Fotheringham, Narcis Pelach, Neil Warnock, Darren Moore, Jon Worthington, Andre Breitenreiter, Michael Duff, Worthington again, Grant, and Manning.

The Terriers are also facing arguably the most competitive third tier in recent memory, with Sheffield Wednesday and Leicester City among the sides preparing to drop into it. So, getting the decision right matters enormously.

On that front, at least Nagle's insistence on a thorough process is the correct approach, even if patience among some supporters is running thin.
