Middlesbrough could be in line for a windfall in excess of £25m if Aston Villa sell Morgan Rogers for the £130m they want for the England man.

Middlesbrough are set for a very busy summer as they gear up for a first full season under Kim Hellberg at the Riverside Stadium.

It’s fair to say the previous one was a hectic one for Boro, from Rob Edwards’ decision to leave for Wolves, to the ‘Spygate’ fallout against Southampton, and a play-off final loss to Hull City.

Ultimately, that Wembley defeat condemned Boro to another year in the second tier, and the focus is now on making tweaks to Hellberg’s squad to ensure they can go one better in the 2026/27 campaign.

Middlesbrough have a 20% sell-on clause as Aston Villa set £130m Morgan Rogers price tag

Obviously, another season outside the top-flight is going to have financial ramifications for Middlesbrough, and failure to go up meant that changes were going to have to be made.

One consequence was that the departure of Hayden Hackney felt inevitable, particularly as the midfielder was entering the final 12 months of his contract.

That is proving to be the case, with Hackney expected to join Everton in an initial deal worth around £16m. Whilst that’s a blow for Boro, it should help them bring in their own signings.

And, another way Boro could increase their budget is via Morgan Rogers.

It has been widely reported that Boro included a 20% sell-on as part of the deal that took him to Aston Villa, so all connected to the Teesside outfit have had one eye on the England international in recent windows.

So far, he has remained at Villa, but, once again, Rogers has been linked with a move away this summer, with Arsenal believed to be admirers.

However, Villa are determined not to lose Rogers on the cheap, and The Telegraph has claimed that they are demanding £130m for their key figure.

If a move did happen at that price, it means Middlesbrough would be in line for around £26m, with the update explaining that Villa have factored in the sell-on as part of their valuation.

Middlesbrough will be hoping Morgan Rogers can seal a big move this summer

Firstly, you have to say it was excellent negotiating from Boro to ensure a sell-on clause, especially at 20%.

Obviously, there’s no guarantee he will leave for that fee, but, in the modern game, you can understand why Villa want such a number when you see what other players are going for.

Rogers has been a consistently excellent player in the Premier League for a few years now, and with Unai Emery’s side in the Champions League, they won’t be under huge pressure to sell.

Again, it remains to be seen whether any club meets that asking price, but, even if Rogers went for around £100m, it would still be a nice chunk for Boro, and it would drastically change what they can do in the market.

So, the Championship side will be desperate for this to happen, and if Rogers can play a prominent role in helping England advance in the World Cup, it will only increase his stock further.

Middlesbrough fans react to Morgan Rogers transfer update

As you would expect, this was a talking point among Middlesbrough fans, with this fan comparing it to the Hackney deal, and noting they could make more from a former player, rather than their star man!

Yet, it's fair to say that these Boro fans weren't getting too excited, as they feel a move is unlikely to happen at that price...

Finally, this Boro fan urged the club to back Hellberg to get his own players in if the move does go through...
