The rain was pouring down on him and yet he was beaming: after FC Bayern's 3-0 win at Borussia Mönchengladbach, Jonas Urbig couldn't stop grinning. "For me as a former Köln player, it was a small derby win today," the 22-year-old revealed. Urbig spent his entire youth at 1. FC Köln, arch-rivals of Borussia Mönchengladbach, before joining FC Bayern a good ten months ago.

Clean sheet in the win at former arch-rivals

There he stood, arm in arm with Manuel Neuer, whom he'd replaced in the record champions' goal for the first time this season in the Bundesliga, in front of the visitors' stand at Borussia Park, celebrating the emphatic win with the fans. "We were a man up for a long time, were patient, kept going and deserved to score in the second half," Urbig later concluded. "It was fun to be on the pitch with the team. The lads also made it easy for me."

Jonas Urbig kept a clean sheet against Gladbach.

For Urbig, the thoroughly successful Saturday afternoon kicked off an extraordinary week. On Wednesday, FC Bayern travel to Urbig's boyhood club 1. FC Köln in the second round of the DFB Cup. Urbig will once again be in goal for the Reds in the clash with his former club - Manuel Neuer is still suspended in the cup competition due to being shown a red card last season.

Good feeling going into the clash with his boyhood club

Urbig is really looking forward to the match at his boyhood club: "I'm going into the game with a really good feeling. It's a nice stadium with very good fans, who I also had the privilege of experiencing. We'll also be taking our fans with us and I'm expecting a good game of football," said the stopper, who made a total of 11 competitive appearances for the Billy Goats at senior level and won the domestic championship with the U17s in 2019.

While he didn't have a lot to do during the win in Mönchengladbach on Saturday, it's quite possible that this will change when he returns home to Cologne on Wednesday - after all, Köln are enjoying a strong season so far. "They have a good team, a good coach. We're preparing very professionally because they will demand everything of us," said Urbig, who is expecting a fiercely contested affair. At the end of the game, however, the young keeper wants to be back in front of the Bayern fans celebrating reaching the last 16 of the cup with them - even if a win against his boyhood club might not taste quite as sweet as the personal derby triumph in Gladbach did.
