Le Parisien reports that Liverpool forward Hugo Ekitike suffered a rupture of his right Achilles tendon during Tuesday’s Champions League quarter-final second leg against PSG, a long-term setback for the 23-year-old.
He was taken off on a stretcher in the 30th minute, in tears, as Liverpool lost 2-0 at Anfield after a 2-0 defeat in the first leg.
The diagnosis brings his season to an immediate close, and his manager had already described the issue as quite serious on Tuesday night at Anfield.
Ekitike will be out for several months and will miss the World Cup, scheduled from 11 June to 19 July in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Having impressed this season and during the March camp, the former Paris forward looked well placed to make Didier Deschamps’s squad for the transatlantic trip, and was even pushing for a starting role. He has eight caps and scored his second international goal in the 2-1 friendly win over Brazil on 26 March.
Specialist Dr Nicolas Baudrier said surgery will be required, and that nine months is the best-case timeline for a professional to return to the pitch.
