Manchester United have overtaken their Premier League rivals in a fiercely contested race to sign Valencia CF starlet Hugo Fernandez, according to the latest report from Spain.

Eyed by Europe’s Elite

Fernandez, 18, is attracting attention from across Europe after the central defender impressed during a youth tournament in December.

Champions League holders Paris Saint-Germain have been strongly linked, while Arsenal and Chelsea are also pursuing the Spaniard.

However, Esportsbase reveals it is the Red Devils who are leading the charge after holding talks with the player’s camp ahead of a potential swoop.

Fernandez’s release clause is worth around £4.6 million, though this will double if he remains at the Mestalla Stadium past 31 August. Valencia are said to be “delighted” with their academy graduate’s progress, and he is rapidly closing in on a senior debut.

United target a young defender

United are understood to be targeting a young centre-back this summer amid continued uncertainty over the future of Harry Maguire.

The club have been strongly linked with Sedi Kinteh, who plays for Tromso IL in Norway and is available for around £4 million. The Gambian “gem” boasts a potent combination of speed and strength, and is capable of playing at left-back.

Fernandez is considered a more complete player than Kinteh, however, as he possesses the prototype qualities of a modern centre-back.

The Spain under-19 international possesses an already “imposing” 6’4 frame, while he is described as an “excellent passer, dominant in duels, and highly intelligent”.

Esportsbase reveals the 18-year-old has been presented with a number of “proposals” to entice him away from the Valencian Community.

However, INEOS have demonstrated a renewed focus on securing the best young talent from across the globe since taking the helm at Old Trafford in 2024.

United’s rulers will pull out all the stops to secure Fernandez’s signature if the recruitment department believes he is the next big thing in Spanish football.
