Hugo Souza marks milestone at Corinthians, hails keepers’ work

On Wednesday night, September 10, Corinthians faced Athletico-PR at the Neo Química Arena, for the return match of the Brazil Cup quarter-finals and won by a score of 2 x 0. After the match, goalkeeper Hugo Souza commented on the milestone he reached by saving a penalty in the second half, becoming fourth in the ranking of goalkeepers with the most penalties saved for the club.

"For me, it's a huge deal. He (Dida) is an idol from my childhood. A guy I grew up watching, a guy I always looked up to. And, well, I was able to reach this milestone. I arrived at Corinthians always saying that I wanted to make history and, thank God, today I can check off another chapter and work so that I can achieve more and more.", said the player in the mixed zone.

Hugo Souza also spoke about having given an immediate response after Corinthians made a move to bring him back to Brazil in time to take the field. The Corinthians goalkeeper was in Bolivia with the Brazilian national team delegation and the club sent a private plane to pick him up.

"Thank God. This is the result of a lot of work, the response on the field, for everything we have been doing, for everything we have been showing. I say this because I represent the work done every day.", he said.

"Mine, Donelli's, Felipe Longo's, Cauê's, all the boys who come up to train with us. Marcelão's and Luizão's, who are our coaches. So I represent their work.", Hugo continued.

"And we, thank God, according to our performance, we have become increasingly important to the squad. So I'm happy with the effort that the president, Fabinho, made so that I could be here. And I think I paid the bill.", he added.

The goalkeeper also revealed that he is very tired after going through the whole process of returning to Timão and taking the field. With the national team, Hugo went to the Municipal Stadium of El Alto, which is 4090 meters above sea level and described the situation as "inhumane".

"I'm very tired. But I'm happy to have been able to help the team. I was at the place where yesterday's game was. The conditions are, if I can use a word, I think it's inhumane what happens there. Playing at the height it was, the way it was. I didn't even play and I felt sick during the warm-up.", he commented.

"It's very bad, but we have to adapt, we have to do our best. But it's inhumane what happened there. But, anyway, thank God I was able to come back and arrive in time to rest and be well for the game. Now I get home, I'm going to hug my wife and rest a lot for the game.", the goalkeeper concluded.

After facing Athletico-PR, for the return match of the Brazil Cup quarter-finals, Corinthians turns its focus to the Brazilian Championship. Next Saturday, September 13, at 9:00 p.m. (Brasília time), at the Maracanã Stadium, the Alvinegro will visit Fluminense, in a match valid for the 23rd round of the national tournament.
