Hundreds of Peruvian newborns named Haaland in tribute to Norway striker

Hundreds of Peruvian newborns have been registered as Haaland or Erling Haaland in homage to the Norway striker.

According to L'Équipe, Peru’s civil registry reports that 468 children now bear the name Haaland, with a further 91 registered with the full name Erling Haaland.

Most of the registrations were filed in the days after the World Cup began, with numbers surging once Norway reached the quarter-finals.

Haaland, 25, has scored seven goals in four matches at the tournament. Manchester City’s forward helped Norway beat Brazil 2-1 to book a historic quarter-final place.

Norway face England on Saturday at 23:00 for a spot in the last four.

Peru has long embraced football-inspired names. There are 3,402 people named Messi, including 292 with the full name Lionel Messi. Cristiano Ronaldo has 1,185 Peruvian namesakes, 1,241 people are named Yamal, and 33,809 are named after Neymar.
