Terry has captained the Blues to many major trophies over the years and knows exactly what it means to be a leader.

James is the current skipper, and it’s extra special for both him and the fans given he’s come through the club’s famed Cobham academy.

However, well documented injury issues have limited James to just 25 appearances in all competitions since he was appointed captain by Mauricio Pochettino at the start of the 2023/2024 campaign.

There are different ways of being a captain and showing leadership, and James certainly does things differently to how Terry did.

Enzo Maresca criticised James’ leadership earlier in the season, and the 25-year-old has certainly improved in that aspect since being called out.

Terry admitted he’d had a conversation with James recently in which the pair spoke about how James has to captain the side in his own way.

“Reece leads the team different to the way I did which is fine. There is different ways to be a captain and a leader,” he told BBC Sport.

“I said this to him, Reece has to be 100% Reece James. He doesn’t need to be 10 percent John Terry.

“He has to be really authentic because he is the one speaking in front of the boys as well and if not people will see through.

“He is doing a good job, but I think first and foremost when you are a captain of a football club you need to be consistent in your performances and to do that you have to play week in and week out.”

The skipper has been deployed in midfield in recent weeks, and Terry has said he’s not a fan of right backs playing in the middle of the park.

James has made 14 appearances in all competitions which is more than he managed last season, and both he and Chelsea will be hoping he can stay fit for the remainder of the campaign.
