I think this will be the Newcastle team v Everton

After a couple of positive results in the last week, Newcastle United will head to Merseyside this weekend for our last ever visit to Goodison Park.

It is an old fashioned football stadium that I have visited on a few occasions in years gone by.

I didn’t have a good rapport with Everton supporters whenever I made the journey west. I never liked their ‘Billy Big Bo..ocks’ attitude.

Everton are a club that have been treading water in the EPL for quite some time now. Their glory days of the 1980s when they had a fine side, are now long gone, highly unlikely to ever return again.

I felt sorry for them after English clubs were banned from playing in Europe after the Heysel disaster. Everton had just won the old First Division and the European Cup Winners Cup in 1985, managed by Howard Kendall who was a Geordie. I’m sure they would have had a good chance of winning the European Cup (in it’s old knockout format) given the opportunity.

It should also not be forgotten that Kendall led the Toffees to the League title again in 1987, however, the ban from Europe was to last until 1990.

I think this is the main reason that Everton fans are still some of the bitterest in the country to this day. The recent points deductions for breaching FFP has also given their support a belief that everyone has got it in for them.

After a calamitous start to this season, Sean Dyche’s men picked up their first win of the season last week, when they overturned a one goal deficit against Crystal Palace at Goodison Park.

At times in the past, Everton have proved a tough nut for Newcastle to crack. I am not expecting an easy game this Saturday either but I would be extremely disappointed if we don’t come away from the game with at least a point.

This is a game that I think Anthony Gordon will relish. He’ll be deployed through the middle in this Newcastle team v Everton, with Harvey Barnes on the left.

I’ve a feeling Miguel Almiron will be picked ahead of Jacob Murphy. I think Sandro Tonali will definitely start the game alongside Bruno Guimaraes and it will be interesting to see who Eddie’s third pick in midfield will be. I’m expecting Tino Livramento, Fabian Schar (if fit), Dan Burn and Lewis Hall in defence, with Nick Pope back between the sticks.

There is no love lost between the fans of both clubs. I openly and freely admit that I don’t like Everton and their supporters.

I’ve been thinking of players who have played for both of these famous teams in the last four decades or so. So here goes.

Geoff Nulty, Jim Pearson, Imre Varadi, Gary Megson, John Bailey, Neil McDonald, Kevin Sheedy, Paul Bracewell, Peter Beardsley, Gary Speed, Allesandro Pistone, Steve Watson, Paul Gascoigne, David Ginola, Louis Saha, Dan Gosling, Salomon Rondon, Andros Townsend and Anthony Gordon.

There’s probably some more that I haven’t mentioned and don’t forget that one of our ‘favourite’ ever managers also left to go to Everton back in 1977…
