Pep Guardiola took over boss of Barcelona in 2008.
Inheriting a very good side, the Barca manager would go on to make them an irresistible force.
With the emergence of Lionel Messi, the Catalan club would at times look unbeatable, playing their own unique brand of passing football.
This became known as tiki-taka and was adopted by the Spanish national team.
Spain’s midfield playmakers were Barcelona’s Andres Iniesta and Xavi, backed up by clubmate Sergio Busquets for good measure.
Pep Guardiola could do no wrong at Barcelona and led them to two Champions League successes, but he was always ambitious, began to get itchy feet and started to seek pastures new.
After leaving Barca, Guardiola took a year’s sabbatical from football.
He took over as manager of Bayern Munich in 2013 and won the Bundesliga in each of his three seasons at the Allianz Arena.
The Champions League trophy had eluded him during his spell in Bavaria and Super Pep had already decided that he needed a far richer club to achieve his ultimate dreams.
Step forward Manchester City, who were already well on their way to dominating English football.
Pep Guardiola set off on the first of many spending sprees, that would ultimately leave Man City’s rivals at home and abroad gasping for breath.
Manchester City’s academy was already flourishing before his arrival but good old Pep had decided that ‘Cash was King’ and that Man City would sign whoever they wanted.
For all his tactical brilliance and nous, Pep Guardiola has been nothing but a cheque book manager since his arrival at the Etihad.
He has now won six EPL titles and a single Champions League at Manchester City. His love for the club is obvious and he has been their manager for nearly double the period he managed Barca.
Manchester City’s football has became stale and boring and lots of football fans, including myself, find Pep’s style of possession play a proper turn-off.
They are no longer the best team in the land, Liverpool are, and their other rivals at the top have narrowed the gap on them.
Pep Guardiola has shown many signs of frustration in the last couple of seasons.
The 115 Premier League charges that Manchester City face, cast a formidable shadow over the club.
That though hasn’t stopped Pep Guardiola from splashing out exorbitant amounts of the club’s owners cash though.
Manchester City continue to spend, regardless of the potential consequences of those 115 Premier League charges, PSR concerns clearly aren’t a factor either it appears.
The once lauded Pep Guardiola, is nothing now but a cheque book manager who has lost touch with reality.
Give me an intelligent and astute level headed coach, that will know how to keep his feet on the ground if/when the time comes.
