Ibrahima Konaté’s Liverpool extension, close to completion last month, is now in doubt after a U-turn as he began World Cup preparations at Clairefontaine. According to L'Équipe, talks have stalled.
He had hoped to settle his future before reporting and said last month an agreement was close and there was a strong chance he would stay next season, as he had always wanted.
Talks over 18 months produced an agreement in principle on a five-year deal, with provisional signing dates discussed. In recent weeks negotiations have swung, placing the renewal in doubt. Some believe the 27-year-old could yet remain in the north of England.
The shift stems from internal disagreements amid a chaotic run-in, Liverpool’s faltering finish, ultimately fifth, slowed finalisation and sparked disputes over choices and sums. Meanwhile clubs already circling have moved to concrete talks for the Frenchman, whose contract expires in June.
For Europe’s elite, signing a France international with no fee is a rare opening, and at least three or four clubs have made moves. Real Madrid are working on the option to strengthen at the back, Bayern Munich have asked, and Xabi Alonso’s Chelsea are interested, though the London club start from further back. Timing is central, can Konaté start his World Cup on 16 June still undecided about next season.
