Liverpool’s efforts to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold have come up short.
The homegrown right-back departed for Real Madrid last summer on a cut-price deal worth £10m. Sporting director Richard Hughes activated a £29.5m clause in Jeremie Frimpong’s Bayer Leverkusen contract and Conor Bradley was given a bumper new deal.
But Frimpong has had an up-and-down season - and doesn’t even appear a natural fit at right-back.
Bradley’s season ended in January due to injury and he has got a lot of work to do in order to convince the Premier League champions’ hierarchy that he is the long-term solution in the position.
We’ve seen the Anfield club linked with plenty of right-backs ahead of the summer transfer window opening - as it emerges as a position of real priority.
Arne Slot has been forced to use midfielders there this season - in the shape of Dominik Szoboszlai, Curtis Jones and Wataru Endo - and a proper remedy is now being sought once and for all.
Denzel Dumfries has been floated as an intriguing option - given his experience as a multiple title-winner with Inter Milan and his recognised class.
The 30-year-old has also got a tantalising release clause of just over £20m in his contract - with TEAMtalk now reporting that Liverpool have been sounded out by the Dutchman’s entourage over a deal.
The Merseysiders are well-established watchers of Dumfries - who is coming off the back of another Serie A-winning season. Now his team have been reaching out to Premier League clubs over a deal - with Manchester City and Arsenal also named as suitors.
But it’s Liverpool who are now emerging as the strongest contenders to land the former PSV star.
“Denzel Dumfries’ representatives are actively pushing for a move to Liverpool this summer,” the report reads.
“Dumfries’ camp and intermediaries have been making Liverpool fully aware of both the player’s availability and his strong desire to test himself in the Premier League.
“Inter Milan star Dumfries is increasingly emerging as a genuine possibility,” the report continues.
“Liverpool, under Arne Slot, are known admirers of Netherlands international Dumfries, and there is growing belief among those around the player that Anfield could represent an ideal fit.”
Dumfries would be coming into a club with a strong Dutch presence - in the shape of head coach Slot as well as Virgil van Dijk, Ryan Gravenberch, Cody Gakpo and Frimpong.
He has played in tandem on the right side of the Dutch national team alongside Frimpong - who in Ronald Koeman’s team plays furthest forward. He would be a sensible transfer given his price and experience.
