Liverpool produced yet another last minute winner to edge Atletico Madrid 3-2 at Anfield in a pulsating Champions League clash, and the Late Night Live Podcast on Anfield Index captured the drama perfectly.
Lewis Aspinall summed up the mood: “I can’t do this. I genuinely can’t do this for a full season. I cannot sit here and have to cope with this level of stress for a whole season. But for the fifth match in a row… we’ve won it in the last minute of the game.”
This was not just a win, it was a statement. It was a night of drama, high emotion, and a performance that reminded everyone why Liverpool are feared across Europe.
Aspinall’s words carried both joy and exhaustion: “Literally the last couple of minutes of the match, we’ve won another huge, huge game. Champions League is back. I’m so happy the Champions League is back. Just insanity.”
He highlighted how this has become part of Liverpool’s identity: “No team in the Premier League has won more matches in the last few minutes than Liverpool. We have won forty six games because of this.”
The podcast also touched on Simeone’s meltdown, which added to the spectacle. Aspinall noted: “It wasn’t necessarily all about the late winner. It wasn’t all about Simeone’s implosion… in the last minute, head gone, sent off, police escort down the tunnel.”

While the focus was on the last minute winner, Aspinall gave plenty of credit to key performers.
On Florian Wirtz, he was emphatic: “For Florian Wirtz, that is his best performance in a Liverpool shirt, bar none. It wasn’t perfect. It wasn’t faultless. But… his progressive play with the ball moving forward was brilliant.”

He was equally impressed by Ryan Gravenberch: “There is no player better in Europe on the half-turn than Ryan Gravenberch… The midfield of Atletico didn’t know how to cope with him. Gravenberch’s immense. He is top level.”
Jeremy Frimpong’s display also drew praise: “Frimpong at right back, I thought he was immense. Absolutely incredible today, his performance.”

And while Alexander Isak’s debut was not explosive, Aspinall was fair: “For Isak, he had little glimpses… his close control was good. His movement was fluid… this was as good as we were really going to get in this match.”

Virgil van Dijk’s role in the decisive moment was crucial. Aspinall reminded listeners: “He obviously got the late winner. That alone makes it a class performance. But his defensive performance was up there… eight clearances, one interception, six of seven aerial duels won.”
This was a night that showcased Liverpool’s spirit. Aspinall summed it up perfectly: “As a club, Liverpool is ingrained in our DNA that we will do this in Europe. We will do this in the Premier League. There’s been countless examples… Olympiacos, AC Milan in 2005, Barcelona, PSG last season. There is no team better at getting these type of results than us.”
