Thomas Tuchel expressed his disappointment after Ben White was booed following England’s 1-1 draw against Uruguay at Wembley Stadium.
The Three Lions struggled to create clear-cut chances before White’s 81st-minute goal, and the England manager was surprised by the reception the full-back received.
“I heard he was booed,” Tuchel said. “I didn’t hear it on the field because I was involved in the exchanges. There were some mixed reactions to him, which I’m disappointed about because we protect our players.
“I understood it happened to other players before here. He needs to take it on the chin. Hopefully, he can put it behind him because he’s ready to write some new chapters.”
England started with 11 changes and in a new system, making it an experimental night. Despite the draw, Tuchel was pleased with the players’ attitude and performance.
“I liked the positivity, the attitude, the performance,” he added. “Everyone was always ready to adapt to the questions asked by us. It was a very tactical game. In the moment, we were very good; we didn’t get the goal to get a bit more freedom in our game. The boost was missing, but we kept trying.”
Tuchel also expressed frustration over some referee decisions, including the late penalty awarded to Uruguay.
“It’s a very soft penalty. Of course, there is contact, but it’s so obvious what the striker is trying to do. To overturn the decision when the ref made it clear he saw it.”
He was particularly surprised by VAR’s inconsistencies.
“I was surprised the VAR was in place – I thought it wasn’t working. The tackle on [Phil] Foden was not even checked. The tackle on Noni [Madueke] was not checked. Then suddenly this one is checked.”
