There is a quiet determination about Alexander Isak as he works his way back into the rhythm of elite football, a process that often reveals more about a player’s resolve than any highlight reel ever could. For Liverpool, the return of Isak is not just about numbers on a teamsheet, it is about restoring a focal point in attack at a crucial stage of the season.
After a lengthy absence following ankle surgery that included a fibula fracture, Isak’s reintroduction has been measured. His start against Paris Saint-Germain offered a glimpse of sharpness returning, even if only across 45 minutes.
“Obviously I was out for a long time and I’ve been working hard to get back,” Isak told Liverpoolfc.com. “Very happy to be back out there.
“It’s never easy being out for a long time. But I feel like I’m getting there and hopefully we can get the results as well.”
His words carry the tone of someone aware that recovery is rarely linear. Nearly 16 weeks on the sidelines demanded patience, discipline, and an acceptance of slow progress.
“That’s pretty much every rehab, some are a bit more complicated than others,” said the No.9. “But it was a difficult injury and it took a lot of hard work and long days to get here.”
Liverpool’s attacking options have been dealt another setback with Hugo Ekitike facing a long-term absence after rupturing his Achilles. The timing is cruel, both for the player and for a squad navigating multiple competitions.

“Obviously we’re all gutted for that injury,” Isak continued. “It’s very unfortunate for him and for the team as well. We’re all behind him, supporting him.”
Moments like these tend to reshape dressing rooms. Responsibility shifts, and for Isak, it sharpens the sense that his return carries added weight.
The next test arrives in one of English football’s most emotionally charged fixtures. Liverpool’s trip to Everton at Hill Dickinson Stadium brings intensity that transcends form and league position.
Isak has experienced derby football across Europe, scoring in clashes for former clubs and understanding the unique atmosphere such games generate.
“I don’t really know my record in those games! But I think those are the games that mean the most for the fans and for the players.
“It’s those moments and those games we want to play, and hopefully we can make a good day out of it.
“I think we just need to do a good performance, work hard and play as a team. The quality is there, so we just need to show it.”
For Liverpool, and for Isak, that sentiment feels particularly relevant. Form can be rebuilt, fitness can return, but moments like a Merseyside derby demand immediate conviction. If Isak is to reassert himself, there may be no better stage.
