Watford have reportedly turned down an approach from Burnley for striker Mamadou Doumbia.

That's according to the Watford Observer, who claim Burnley have had a £10 million offer for Doumbia rejected, with Watford viewing him as a key part of their plans as they aim to launch a promotion push under new head coach Paulo Pezzolano next season.

Doumbia joined the Hornets from Black Stars FC last summer, and after gradually being introduced to Championship football over the course of the campaign, he ended last season as the club's first-choice striker.

One of Doumbia's two goals last season came in a 2-1 defeat to Burnley at Vicarage Road in April, and it seems his performance that day caught the eye of the newly-promoted Premier League side, but their offer for the 19-year-old has been rebuffed by Watford.

Despite the fact that Doumbia signed a six-year contract when he arrived last summer, the Hornets are believed to be keen to tie the Mali international down to a new deal as owner Gino Pozzo continues to hold firm on his reluctance to sell any of the club's key players.

When asked for his reaction to reports that Burnley have had a £10 million bid rejected for Doumbia, FLW's Watford fan pundit Justin Beattie admitted he is surprised the club have turned down such a sizeable offer for a player who is still relatively unproven, but he believes it signals Pozzo's desire to attack the Championship next season.

"£10 million for Mamadou Doumbia I would have personally thought is a very high offer," Justin said.

"He only had about half a season last time out, and although he showed enormous potential and flashes of really good forward play, he is still very young and still quite raw.

"So to see that we've turned down an approach of £10 million for him is very surprising, but it also quietly suggests that perhaps we are going for it this season or we're going to trying to give it a real go, and keeping young talents like Doumbia is probably part of that plan.

"Yes, I'm surprised we turned down that kind of money for him, but at the same time, I'm really happy that we are seemingly in a position to do that and really give this season a go."

Doumbia is a player with a lot of potential, and he impressed for Watford in the second half of last season, but many owners would have been tempted to cash in on a striker who has scored just two goals at Championship level if they received a bid of £10 million.

However, Pozzo's decision to reject Burnley's significant offer for Doumbia suggests that he is serious about not selling any of the club's stars this summer as he focuses more of his energy on events at Vicarage Road, and it has been revealed that he has also turned down interest in midfielder Giorgi Chakvetadze and forward Kwadwo Baah.

While there is no guarantee that Doumbia or new signings Vivaldo Semedo and Luca Kjerrumgaard will be prolific goalscorers next season, Pezzolano does have three exciting young strikers at his disposal, and if he can get the best out of them, the Hornets could be a surprise promotion contender.
