Manchester United may have emerged victorious against Sunderland at the weekend, but they remain in 10th position and have lost as many as they have won this new Premier League season.

On top of that, the Red Devils exited the Carabao Cup in the second round itself, and Ruben Amorim remains under a lot of pressure.

The results aside, most of the criticism faced by the Portuguese tactician has been due to his flawed tactics and his tendency to utilise square pegs in round holes.

Bruno Fernandes has suffered as a result, with the club captain forced to play in a deeper role to accommodate the likes of Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo.

Meeting with players

He is not happy with this new arrangement, and as per ESPN, INEOS recently held a meeting with senior members of the squad to understand the mood within the club regarding the beleaguered head coach.

To the ex-Sporting CP boss’ relief, he still retains the backing of most players and that has pleased the co-owners, who were reportedly looking at other managers should the team have continued their downward spiral.

“Manchester United’s hierarchy are convinced the squad are behind head coach Ruben Amorim after positive conversations between players and club bosses, sources have told ESPN.

“Sources have told ESPN that CEO Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox have also spoken to members of the squad — including captain Bruno Fernandes and the leadership group — and are convinced there’s continued support for the Portuguese coach.

Players continue to back Ruben Amorim

“The conversations were not formal in nature and were not designed to “sound out” players on Amorim’s future. However, feedback on the 40-year-old former Sporting CP boss and the atmosphere in the dressing room is said to have been good.”

To be fair to the players, they have publicly backed Amorim despite poor results, with Mason Mount and Matthijs de Ligt among the outspoken supporters of the head coach.

While the meeting might have been positive, Ruben Amorim cannot afford to let up. The upcoming Liverpool game is a huge acid test for the team.

Should they manage a positive result, the mood will shift instantly, but another heavy defeat could once again trigger the alarm bells at Old Trafford.
