Fermin Lopez is back on the road towards full fitness, and for FC Barcelona, his recovery could feel like one of the most important reinforcements of the summer.
The 23-year-old suffered a fractured fifth metatarsal in his right foot during the final league match against Real Betis on May 17, just as he was finishing the best season of his career.
According to SPORT, Fermin ended the campaign with 13 goals and 16 assists before the injury cruelly ruled him out of the World Cup with Spain.
That setback was difficult to accept, but the academy midfielder has now recovered mentally and is making excellent progress physically.
During his holiday, Fermin continued working every day with a physiotherapist provided by Barcelona.
His recovery programme included sessions of around three hours, with the clear aim of returning to preseason in the best possible condition.
He reported back for medical tests on July 13 and is already working on the grass and touching the ball, although he has not yet fully rejoined group training.
Fermin will also travel with the squad for Barcelona’s training camp at St George’s Park in England between July 27 and August 3.
For Hansi Flick, this is excellent news. Fermin’s intensity, movement into the box, goals and positional versatility made him one of Barcelona’s most productive players last season.
His 29 direct goal contributions underline just how much he has grown.
Barca do not need to rush his return, especially after such a demanding recovery, but having him available again gives Flick another player capable of changing matches through energy and aggression.
Fermin missed the World Cup at the worst possible moment, but that disappointment could now become motivation.
For Barcelona, a fully fit and hungry Fermin is not just another player returning from injury. He is a proven difference-maker entering his prime, and his comeback could genuinely feel like a major new signing.
