Valencia beat Barcelona at Mestalla on a breathless final day, flirting with Europe despite a season spent near relegation. Many still left frustrated after a night of mixed emotions, according to Superdeporte.
In the first half there was a penalty for a foul by Ronald Araújo on Jesús Vázquez, which left the full-back dazed. Diego López protested most and looked furious as he headed for the tunnel.
After the break Marc Bernal caught Jesús Vázquez with a clear kick, but the contact was ruled outside the area.
Following Valencia’s second goal, a section of Mestalla erupted when a radio reported a Catena strike for Osasuna that would have put Valencia into the Conference. The goal never stood, the referee cancelled the action for an illegal restart. Even members of the home bench turned to watch fans celebrating before the confusion cleared.
Post-match, several players appeared to be saying goodbye, including Thierry, Ramazani and Unai Núñez. Attention centred on Cömert, who arrived in winter 2022, had loans at Nantes and Valladolid, and is now finishing his best spell back at Mestalla. All signs point to him leaving once his contract ends, with no renewal offered so far, as some fans urged him to stay.
Ferran Torres again took centre stage. His mis-hit shot became an assist for Lewandowski, yet Ferran barely celebrated, offering brief congratulations to the Pole and little more.
